Govt initiates process to import wheat from India
Because of the Indian ban on the exports of wheat, Nepali flour industries are severely suffering. So, the government has initiated a process to import this grain product from the southern neighbour. In this regard, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Supply is sending a letter to India via the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This was revealed by Ganesh Prasad Pandey, secretary at the Commerce Ministry, during a meeting held between the representatives of the Nepal Flour Mills' Association and ministry officials today. It is said that the Indian embassy has already shown its willingness to supply the required quantity of wheat to Nepal.
According to the Association, if the process to import wheat is carried out promptly, Nepal will get the same within 15 to 20 days. It further informs that Nepal is in need of a total of 1 million tonnes of wheat this year. Of this total quantity, 305 thousand tonnes are estimated to be produced domestically, while the remaining 605 thousand tonnes should be arranged from India.
India banned wheat exports on 13 May 2022 citing the pressing need to manage the overall food security of the country.
