Election Commission fixes specific criteria for election canvassing in media

KATHMANDU, OCTOBER 26 : The Election Commission (EC) has determined specific criteria to be followed by the political parties, their sister organisations and the election candidates for publicising advertisements in the media in the course of canvassing for the upcoming House of Representatives and Province Assembly elections.

Clause 15 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2079 BS issued by the EC stipulates that the political parties can disseminate their election advertisements for a maximum of four times in 24 hours with an interval of one hour while publicising through the privately-owned television, radio or FM radio.

 Similarly, political parties can publicise their election-related publicity materials for a maximum of one minute at one time. According to the Commission, the political parties while making publicity through the private sector-run newspapers can publish their advertisement material of a maximum size of 7 by 7 inches each day in one newspaper only.

The candidate towards the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system of election for the Province Assembly can publicize the election-related advertisement for a maximum of three times in 24 hours with an interval of an hour, and they can do so for a maximum of one minute for one time.

Likewise, the candidate contesting the election for the member of the House of Representatives (HoR) can publicise the election-related advertisement for amaximum of four times in 24 hours and for a maximum of one minute at one time. The Commission has made provisions in the Election Code of Conduct prohibiting publicising and publishing election-related publicity materials in foreign media.
