"Economic development can be bolstered through increased consumption of electricity"
KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 8: Finance Minister Janardan Sharma has said that increasing electricity consumption would help boost the country's economic development. He said so during the inauguration of the Fin Electro Tech-2022 exhibition today in the federal capital. According to him, it is not time to sell power to any foreign country but to consume it domestically to the limits.
The minister also argued that the returns on the investment in hydropower are not as per the expectations in recent days due to the impacts of the COVID crisis and the Russia-Ukraine war.
Speaking in the same programme, Executive Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority, Kulman Ghising, said that the markets of especially electric goods would expand once the consumption of electricity goes up.
Similarly, Senior Vice Chairperson of FNCCI, Chandra Dhakal, urged the government to save the investment of billions of rupees in electricity generation. "The electricity produced by the private sector is being wasted because of the delay in signing Power Purchase Agreements with the government."
