Pay taxes or else face legal action, local levels warn Triveni Group

JHAPA, MARCH 30 : A total of six local levels in Jhapa and Illam have decided to work together to make Triveni Group to pay its due taxes. Among them, Mechi Municpality, Buddha Shanti Rural Municipality, and Bahadashi Rural Municipality are from the Jhapa district, while Sooryaday, Illam and Maaii Municipalities belong to the Ilam district. The meeting of the chairpersons of these local levels held yesterday at Mechinagar in Jhapa made the very decision.

"For the last 22 years, the group has continuously denied paying a total of Rs 490 million  that includes property and corporate taxes as well as land revenue.   So, we decided  to make joint efforts to put pressure on it to immediate fulfill its financial obligation towards the state," says Gopal Budhathoki, chairperson, Mechinagar Municipality.

On June 28 2000, the government and the group had signed an agreement, allowing  the later to  operate six tea gardens and a factory owned by  Nepal Tea Development Corportion on lease for  50 years.

" Triveni Group is earning millions of rupees in profit from using the government property. However, it has been evading the  related taxes despite the repeated request not to so," says Budhathoki adding."But, this time, it will face legal actions in case the group again refused to to clear its dues to the state."
