"DAP is already imported and urea is coming soon"
KATHMANDU, JUNE 14: Salt Trading Corporation Ltd. has said that it is importing chemical fertilizers to meet the demands of farmers. According to it, 17,000 metric tons of DAP are already imported into the country and being distributed from various depots. The additional 3,000 metric tons of the same are said to have arrived at the Calcutta dry port in India. Similarly, 22,000 metric tons of urea will also be imported within a week.
The Corporation is directed by the government to import as many as 100 thousand tons of chemical fertilizers this year.
Though the monsoon-the key paddy planting season- has arrived, the farmers across are facing a shortage of chemical fertilizers. In this context, the corporation claims that the current consignment of chemical fertilizers in the country would be a huge relief to them.
It is learned that the Agriculture Ministry has provided the grants of more than Rs 11 billion this year for facilitating the supply of chemical fertilizers. According to the Ministry, some 500 thousand metric tons of chemical fertilizers are used in Nepal annually.
Agriculture is the mainstay of Nepal's economy, employing around 60 percent of the total workforce and contributing 25.83 percent to the national economy.
