DIG promotion process smacks of unfairness

KATHMANDU, JUNE 26: Some of the deserving officials with the integrity of the Nepali Police have been treated unfairly in the promotion process for the post of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). According to media sources, the very situation arose when those having shady professional backgrounds also made their way into the list of a total of 17 police officials recommended last week for the post of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).

Among the total recommended officials, 13 are those handling the post of SSP earlier in the first lot while the remaining four-Ashok Singh, Sudip Giri, Durga Singh Chand and Kiran Rana- belong to the second lot. The 5 officials-Bishnu Kumar KC, Bharat Bahadur Bohra and Kuber Kadayat- getting more priority in the second lot have been left out in the promotion process. Among them, KC is currently acting as spokesperson of the Nepal Police.

In the police headquarters,  talks are going around that the secretariat of the IGP is responsible for the current unfairness being seen in the promotion. Another office among the said five, Bohara has already acted as Personnel Security Officer of the current prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.  But he is facing unjustness when Deuba himself is at the helm of affairs.

Kadayat is that official who successfully took up the command to control the chaotic situation in Kanchanpur triggered after the rape and murder of Niramala Pant.   But his performance did not get due recognition in the promotion process.  Unfortunately, those officials indulged in corruption have been prioritized in the very process.

Basant Kunwar, Tek Prasad Rai, and Ashok Singh are placed in the first, second and third numbers respectively in the promotion for DIG. Earlier, Kunwar, Rai and Rai was in the same position while Kunwar and Singh were in the second and nineteenth numbers respectively, Sandeep Bhandari, who was earlier in the first number, is now in the seventh number while Umesh Lal Joshi earlier in the third number is now in 11th number.  Shyam Lal Gyawali in the fourth number is now in the fifth number whereas Deepak Thapa earlier in the sixth number is now in the fourth number.
