Nepal looks to supply manpower to Maldives

KATHMANDU, MARCH 4 : Nepal and Maldives have held discussions about the possibility  of supplying human resources by the former to the latter.

Such talks were held between a meeting between Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security, Krishna Kumar Shrestha and newly appointed ambassador of Maldives to Nepal, Dr. Hussain Niyaaz held in Lalitpur on Thursday (Mar 4).

It may be noted that Maldives has already requested Nepal to send especially doctors and nurses and the two countries are also finalizing a draft of the labour agreement regarding the same.  Currently, more than two thousand Nepali people are expected to working in the medical field of Maldives.

In this light, Minister Shrestha proposed Dr. Niyaaz that Nepal looks to supply the manpower not in the medical but also in other sectors of Maldives like tourism and construction during the meet.  On his part, the Maldivian took such a proposal in a positive light.

Lately, there has been a growing trend of Nepali migrant flying to Maldives for employment. It is estimated  that more than 5000 thousand such workers are currently in Maldives.

Those Nepali working in Maldives are being compelled to buy the US dollar at an exorbitant rate while exchanging their remunerations received in the Maldivian currency of Rufiyaa due to the unavailability of foreign exchange facility from local banks there. In this connection, Minister Shrestha urged Dr Niyaaz to take the initiative in resolving this problem.
