"Nepal should invest 8 to 10 percent of its GDP in Infrastructure"

KATHMANDU, SEPTEMBER 9 : The fourth edition of Nepal Infrastructure Summit with a theme ‘Infrastructure for Growth’ kicked off in the capital yesterday.

Speaking during the inaugural session of this two-day summit, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, former prime minister, said,” It is mandatory for the government to be more serious in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country.”  He also stressed on the need to forge a strong collaboration between the public and the private sector to impel foreigners to invest in Nepal.       

Similarly, Managing Director of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Kulman Ghising informed that his organisation is hastening the process of constructing cross-border transmission lines between Nepal and India to export at least 13,000 MW of electricity to India in the next five years.

According to him, such transmission lines with capacities of 132 kV and 400 kV are being constructed at a number of locations.

Speaking on the same occasion, Vishnu Kumar Agrawal, president of the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) said that the potentials to invest  in the infrastructure sector for expediting the  economic development are huge.

“Bridging the gap in the infrastructure sector and achieving sustainable development goals for Nepal call for investing 8 to 9.54 percent of the GDP in the very sector," he pointe out.

The ‘Nepal Infrastructure Summit’ is being organised by the CNI.
