Govt making preparations to resume milk import

KATHMANDU, MAY 7: The government is making preparations to resume the import of milk from India. The Dairy Development Board has recently recommended that the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development bring 1,30,000 liters of milk daily from the southern neighbor for three months. Some six months back too, the government resumed the milk import with a provision of quantitative restrictions citing the scarcity of milk in the Nepali market.

During the past Nepali month of Falgun ( February 13 to March 14 ), dairy entrepreneurs had demanded the import of powder and raw milka along with butter from India. In response,  the ministry asked the board to look into the demand and suggest a way out. Then the latter came up with the latest proposal of resuming the milk of the said quantity.

According to the Nepal Dairy Association, from Jestha (May 15 to June 14) to Kartik (October 18 to November 16), there will be a daily of milk amounting to 2 lakh liters per day. "So, there is no alternative to the resumption of milk import."
